The agricultural sector faces growing challenges related to efficiency and sustainability, with digital transformation and the application of advanced technologies becoming key components in addressing these issues.
The AgroSmart project marks a significant step towards modernizing agriculture by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative solutions, with the aim of improving decision-making processes and optimizing resources.
Application of AI technologies in agriculture
Through the AgroSmart project, a prototype AI solution has been developed, enabling farmers to assess wheat yield by simply photographing the crops. This innovation is particularly useful in situations where the use of mechanization is limited or unavailable, with prediction accuracy exceeding 90%.
Achieved results and collaboration with farmers
The AgroSmart project has achieved notable results through collaboration with five agricultural entities that actively participated in data collection and validation of yield predictions in wheat fields. In addition, five workshops were held, attended by over 80 agricultural experts, focusing on the benefits of smart agriculture and AI technologies.
Publication of professional literature and research internships
As part of the project, a manual titled "Application of Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture" was published, allowing the dissemination of knowledge on this subject among professionals and practitioners. Furthermore, collaboration between the Verlab Institute and the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the University of Sarajevo has been established, leading to the opening of a research internship at the Verlab Institute for the purpose of working on a master's thesis in the field of AI application in agriculture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
International cooperation and experience exchange
The project has also achieved important cross-border cooperation with the BioSens Institute in Serbia, creating space for the exchange of experiences and further development of innovations in AI applications in agriculture.
Partners and cooperatives
The AgroSmart project has been realized with the support of key partners, including MPI "MLIN" d.d. Ustikolina, VIP DRINA Ustikolina, EKO Bosanska Posavina, Poljoprivrednik Derventa, MLIN Kopačević, and Profarm. Their contribution to data collection and testing of the AI solution was essential to the success of the project.
Funding and implementation
The project "Research on the Application of Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Digital Transformation and Innovation in the Agricultural Sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina – AgroSmart" is funded by the European Union through the EU4AGRI initiative and implemented in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Czech Development Agency (CzDA).
